A
Accumulation
A period when whale wallets increase their holdings of a token through repeated purchases or exchange withdrawals, signaling conviction in the asset. In Deep Blue Alpha's tracking, accumulation is identified when multiple wallets show sustained buy-side or withdrawal activity for the same token over days or weeks. The opposite of distribution.
See live accumulation data →All-Time High (ATH)
The highest price a token has ever reached on any exchange. Whale trackers compare current prices to ATH to gauge drawdown depth and recovery potential. Deep Blue Alpha displays ATH drawdown as a percentage on each token page, providing context for whether whale accumulation is happening near highs or at deep discounts.
Automated Market Maker (AMM)
A smart contract protocol that uses liquidity pools instead of traditional order books to facilitate token swaps on decentralized exchanges. AMMs like Uniswap, Curve, and Balancer allow anyone to trade tokens directly on-chain. Whale DEX swaps tracked by Deep Blue Alpha are executed through AMM contracts.
B
Bear Whale
A whale wallet that is actively distributing or selling large token positions, creating sustained sell-side pressure. Bear whales can influence short-term price action through the sheer size of their orders. Deep Blue Alpha identifies bear whale behavior through negative net flow patterns and high exchange deposit volume.
Blockchain Explorer
A web tool that allows anyone to search and view transactions, wallet balances, and smart contract activity on a public blockchain. Etherscan is the most widely used Ethereum explorer. Deep Blue Alpha goes beyond raw explorer data by aggregating whale-level activity into actionable flow metrics and sentiment scores.
Buy Ratio
The percentage of total tracked whale volume that is buy-side (inflows). A buy ratio above 50% means more whale volume is flowing into a token than out of it. In Deep Blue Alpha's tracking, buy ratio is calculated from live on-chain data and displayed on each token page and the Whales Buying Today board.
See live buy ratios →C
CEX (Centralized Exchange)
A centralized exchange like Coinbase, Binance, or Kraken where users trade through an intermediary that holds custody of funds. CEX deposits and withdrawals make up the vast majority of whale activity tracked by Deep Blue Alpha. When a whale withdraws tokens from a CEX to a private wallet, it is generally read as an accumulation signal.
Conviction Score
A metric measuring how strongly a whale wallet is committed to a token position, based on holding duration, position size relative to the wallet's portfolio, and accumulation pattern. Deep Blue Alpha's conviction scoring is part of the Intelligence Suite, available on Pro tier and above.
Explore conviction scoring →Cost Basis
The average price at which a whale wallet acquired its current holdings of a token, calculated from historical on-chain transactions. Comparing cost basis to current market price shows whether a whale is sitting on unrealized profit or loss. Deep Blue Alpha tracks cost basis for whale wallets on the wallet detail pages.
D
DeFi (Decentralized Finance)
The ecosystem of financial protocols built on blockchains that operate without centralized intermediaries. DeFi includes lending (Aave, Compound), decentralized exchanges (Uniswap, Curve), derivatives (Synthetix), and liquid staking (Lido). Whale activity in DeFi protocols is tracked by Deep Blue Alpha through on-chain transaction monitoring.
DEX (Decentralized Exchange)
A decentralized exchange where trades execute directly on-chain through smart contracts, with no intermediary holding funds. Uniswap, Curve, and SushiSwap are major Ethereum DEXes. DEX swaps represent a small but significant portion of whale activity tracked by Deep Blue Alpha, distinct from exchange flow (CEX deposits/withdrawals).
Distribution
The opposite of accumulation: a period when whale wallets reduce their holdings through sales or exchange deposits, signaling reduced conviction or profit-taking. In Deep Blue Alpha's tracking, distribution is identified through sustained sell-side flow, negative net flow, and rising exchange deposit volume.
E
Ethereum
The blockchain network that Deep Blue Alpha tracks. Ethereum is the largest smart-contract platform by total value locked, hosting the majority of DeFi protocols, NFT markets, and ERC-20 tokens. All whale wallets, transactions, and flow data on Deep Blue Alpha are sourced from the Ethereum mainnet.
Exchange Deposit
A transfer of tokens from a private wallet to a centralized exchange. Large exchange deposits from whale wallets are generally interpreted as a distribution or sell-side signal, since tokens must be on an exchange to be sold through a centralized order book. Deep Blue Alpha tags these as CEX_DEPOSIT with a bearish sentiment label.
Exchange Flow
The aggregate movement of tokens between private wallets and centralized exchanges, combining both deposits (bearish signal) and withdrawals (bullish signal). Exchange flow is the dominant type of whale activity on Ethereum — roughly 97% of tracked volume on Deep Blue Alpha is exchange transfers, not DEX swaps. See also: withdrawal share.
Watch live exchange flow →Exchange Withdrawal
A transfer of tokens from a centralized exchange to a private wallet. Large exchange withdrawals from whale wallets are generally interpreted as an accumulation signal, since removing tokens from an exchange suggests the whale intends to hold rather than sell. Deep Blue Alpha tags these as CEX_WITHDRAW with a bullish sentiment label.
F
Flash Loan
An uncollateralized loan that must be borrowed and repaid within a single blockchain transaction. Flash loans are used for arbitrage, liquidations, and collateral swaps. They can produce large on-chain volume that looks like whale activity but is actually automated and carries no directional conviction. Deep Blue Alpha's pipeline filters out known flash-loan contracts.
Flow Direction
Whether tracked whale volume for a token is net positive (more flowing in, generally bullish) or net negative (more flowing out, generally bearish) over a given time window. Deep Blue Alpha displays flow direction with green (inflow) and red (outflow) indicators across the live feed, token tracker, and whale reports.
G
Gas
The fee paid to execute transactions on the Ethereum network, denominated in gwei (a fraction of ETH). Gas costs vary with network congestion. Whales sometimes time their large transactions during low-gas periods to minimize execution costs, which is why whale transaction patterns can cluster around off-peak hours.
H
Hodl
A deliberate misspelling of "hold," meaning to keep a crypto position rather than sell it. In whale tracking, long-duration hodling is one of the strongest conviction signals — a whale that holds a position through market downturns demonstrates higher conviction than one that trades actively. Deep Blue Alpha's conviction score factors in holding duration.
I
Impermanent Loss
The reduction in value that a liquidity provider experiences compared to simply holding the deposited tokens, caused by price divergence between the paired assets in an AMM pool. Impermanent loss becomes "permanent" only when liquidity is withdrawn at an unfavorable ratio. Some whale wallets tracked by Deep Blue Alpha provide liquidity on DEXes and are exposed to this risk.
L
Liquidity Pool
A smart contract holding paired token reserves that enable trading on a decentralized exchange. When you swap tokens on Uniswap, you are trading against a liquidity pool rather than another person. Deep Blue Alpha tracks whale swaps that execute through major liquidity pools on Ethereum, including Uniswap V2/V3, Curve, Balancer, and SushiSwap.
M
Market Cap
The total market value of a token's circulating supply, calculated as price multiplied by circulating supply. Market cap is used to rank tokens by size and gauge the relative scale of whale flow — a $500K whale inflow on a $50M-cap token carries more weight than the same amount on a $5B-cap token. Deep Blue Alpha displays market cap on every token page.
MEV (Maximal Extractable Value)
The profit that block producers or searchers can extract by reordering, inserting, or censoring transactions within a block. MEV bots front-run large DEX swaps, sandwich trades, and exploit arbitrage opportunities. Deep Blue Alpha's wallet discovery pipeline filters out known MEV bots, which produce high on-chain volume but are not genuine whale conviction.
N
Net Flow
The difference between total inflows (buys + exchange withdrawals) and total outflows (sells + exchange deposits) for a token over a given period. Positive net flow means more value is flowing into whale wallets than out. Net flow is the primary signal on Deep Blue Alpha's token tracker and Whales Buying Today board.
See live net flow by token →O
On-Chain
Activity that is recorded directly on a blockchain and is publicly verifiable by anyone. On-chain data includes wallet balances, token transfers, smart contract interactions, and DEX swaps. Deep Blue Alpha is an on-chain intelligence platform — every data point it surfaces comes from publicly observable Ethereum transactions, not exchange APIs or self-reported data.
P
P&L (Profit & Loss)
The financial performance of a whale wallet's token positions. Realized P&L reflects completed trades; unrealized P&L reflects the current value of unsold holdings versus their cost basis. Deep Blue Alpha calculates both from on-chain transaction history for tracked wallets.
Browse wallet P&L →Position Size
The dollar value of a whale wallet's holdings in a specific token. Position size relative to the wallet's total portfolio indicates concentration risk and conviction level. A whale with 40% of their portfolio in a single token has much stronger conviction (and risk exposure) than one with 2%.
R
Realized P&L
The profit or loss that a whale wallet has locked in by actually selling tokens. Realized P&L reflects completed trades where tokens moved from the wallet at a price higher (profit) or lower (loss) than the cost basis. Unlike unrealized P&L, realized P&L cannot change with market price movements.
S
Sentiment Index
Slippage
The difference between the expected price of a trade and the actual execution price, caused by market movement or insufficient liquidity. Large whale DEX swaps are particularly susceptible to slippage because they can consume significant depth from a liquidity pool. Whales often split large orders across multiple transactions to reduce slippage impact.
Smart Contract
Self-executing code deployed on a blockchain that runs automatically when predetermined conditions are met. Smart contracts power DEXes, lending protocols, and token transfers on Ethereum. Deep Blue Alpha distinguishes between EOA (externally owned account) wallets — controlled by humans — and smart contract wallets when tracking whale activity.
Smart Money
Wallets with a demonstrated track record of profitable on-chain trading, identified through historical P&L analysis. Not all whales are smart money — some large wallets consistently underperform. Deep Blue Alpha tracks both volume-weighted whale activity and conviction-weighted signals to help distinguish high-conviction wallets from passive large holders.
Stablecoin
A cryptocurrency designed to maintain a stable value relative to a fiat currency, typically pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. USDC, USDT, and DAI are major Ethereum stablecoins. Deep Blue Alpha excludes stablecoin-denominated transactions from whale valuation metrics to avoid inflating wallet values with non-volatile holdings.
T
Token
A digital asset issued on a blockchain, typically following a standard like ERC-20 on Ethereum. Tokens can represent utility (UNI, LINK), governance (AAVE, COMP), value transfer (ETH), or any programmable asset. Deep Blue Alpha tracks whale flow across 130+ Ethereum tokens.
Browse tracked tokens →Total Value Locked (TVL)
The total dollar value of assets deposited in a DeFi protocol's smart contracts. TVL is a key measure of a protocol's adoption and trust. Whale activity in high-TVL protocols (Aave, Lido, Uniswap) carries different implications than activity in low-TVL protocols, because larger pools absorb large trades with less slippage.
Transaction
A signed operation broadcast to the Ethereum network, such as a token transfer, DEX swap, or smart contract interaction. Every whale transaction tracked by Deep Blue Alpha includes the wallet address, token, direction (buy/sell or deposit/withdrawal), dollar value, and timestamp. Browse transactions in real time on the live whale feed.
See live transactions →U
Unrealized P&L
The theoretical profit or loss on tokens a whale wallet still holds, calculated by comparing the current market price to the wallet's cost basis. Unrealized P&L changes with every price tick and only becomes realized when the tokens are sold. Deep Blue Alpha calculates unrealized P&L using live market prices from CoinGecko.
W
Wallet
An Ethereum address that can hold, send, and receive tokens. In whale tracking, "wallet" usually refers to an externally owned account (EOA) controlled by a private key, as opposed to a smart contract. Deep Blue Alpha tracks 20,000+ whale wallets identified through on-chain volume, exchange flow patterns, and Dune Analytics holder data.
Browse whale wallets →Whale
A wallet holding a large amount of cryptocurrency, typically $250K or more in on-chain assets (the admission threshold for Deep Blue Alpha's tracked universe). The term comes from traditional finance where large institutional traders are called whales because their trades can move markets. Deep Blue Alpha's whale discovery pipeline uses on-chain volume, DEX activity, exchange flow, and Dune Analytics holder data to identify and track whale wallets on Ethereum.
Whale Alert
A notification triggered when a tracked whale wallet executes a large transaction, such as a significant exchange withdrawal, DEX swap, or cross-wallet transfer. Deep Blue Alpha's live feed streams whale alerts in real time, and paid-tier users can configure custom alerts for specific wallets or tokens.
See live whale alerts →Whale Convergence
When multiple independent whale wallets accumulate the same token within a short time window, without apparent coordination. Convergence from unrelated wallets suggests that multiple sophisticated actors have independently arrived at the same conviction about a token. Deep Blue Alpha's Intelligence Suite includes multi-wallet convergence detection as a Pro-tier feature.
Explore convergence signals →Whale Sentiment Index (WSI)
A daily 0–100 score measuring aggregate whale buying versus selling activity across all tracked wallets on Ethereum. A score above 50 indicates net buying pressure; below 50 indicates net selling. The WSI is updated daily on Deep Blue Alpha and is available for free at deepbluealpha.io/whale-index.
See today's WSI →Wrapped ETH (WETH)
An ERC-20 token that represents ETH in a 1:1 wrapper, allowing native ETH to interact with DeFi protocols and DEXes that require ERC-20 token standards. Most whale DEX swaps tracked by Deep Blue Alpha involve WETH pairs, since WETH is the standard quote token on Uniswap and other Ethereum AMMs.
Y
Yield
The return earned on a crypto position, typically expressed as an annual percentage rate (APR or APY). Yield sources include lending (Aave, Compound), liquidity provision (Uniswap, Curve), and staking (Lido, Rocket Pool). Some whale wallets tracked by Deep Blue Alpha generate yield through DeFi protocols in addition to directional token positions.
