On-Chain Data for AI Agents: MCP Servers & Crypto APIs Compared (2026)
Which crypto data providers run MCP servers for Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor, what each returns, what it costs, and when an agent should use a REST API instead.
Published 2026-10-16 · Facts checked 2026-10-16 · Deep Blue Alpha
Short answer (as of Oct 16, 2026): several crypto data providers now run official MCP servers. Deep Blue Alpha’s MCP server (https://deepbluealpha.io/mcp) is free with no key and answers questions about Ethereum whale moves with 7 tools, including token whale activity, exchange-flow leaders and recent whale moves (limit: 120 calls per 10 minutes per IP). Nansen (calls use your API credits), Glassnode (beta; keyless access limited to 30 days of history), CryptoQuant (keyless shared pool), Dune and CoinGecko (market data; keyless version free) also publish MCP servers.
For agents that run on a schedule or make many calls, use a REST API with your own tool definitions: Deep Blue Alpha’s Whale plan includes 25,000 calls/day (personal use), and the Business plan ($299/mo, opening soon) covers commercial agents at 250,000 calls/day.
AI agents need two things from a crypto data source: a way to call it (an MCP server or a well-described API) and answers that are labeled clearly enough that the model does not misstate them. The second point is easy to miss. If a tool returns “whale buys” when the underlying rows are exchange withdrawals, the agent will confidently repeat the error. This page compares the official MCP servers from crypto data providers, then covers when to switch to a REST API.

| CryptoQuant | mcp.cryptoquant.com/mcp | Keyless shared pool; key gives a dedicated rate limit | Exchange flows and on-chain metrics |
| Dune | api.dune.com/mcp/v1 | OAuth or API key; plan requirement not stated | Queries over chain data |
| CoinGecko | mcp.api.coingecko.com/mcp | Keyless free version; keyed Pro version | Market data (prices, market caps), not wallet flow |

Every tool reports exchange withdrawals and deposits separately from DEX swaps, so an agent quoting the output says “pulled off exchanges” rather than “bought”.
What to check before wiring a data source into an agent
- Scope stated in the output. Deep Blue Alpha’s tools describe moves by 20,000+ tracked Ethereum whale wallets, not every wallet on the chain; an agent should repeat that scope rather than generalize to “the market”.
- Labels the model cannot misread. Tool output that says “withdrawn from exchanges” and “DEX swaps” separately keeps the model from inventing purchases.
- Windows and timestamps. Every answer should carry its window (1h, 24h, 7d, 30d) and the time it was generated, so a stale answer is visible.
- Rate limits and keys. Keyless servers share limits across users (Deep Blue Alpha: 120 calls per 10 minutes per IP; CryptoQuant and CoinGecko: shared pools). Keyed servers bill calls to your plan (Nansen credits, Glassnode credits).
- Chain coverage. Deep Blue Alpha is Ethereum mainnet only. Pair it with a multi-chain source if the agent must answer about Solana, Bitcoin or layer-2 networks.
- License. An internal research assistant at a company is commercial use (Business plan); an agent that shows the data to your customers is redistribution (Enterprise).
Example questions the tools answer
“Which tokens did tracked Ethereum whales pull off exchanges in the last 24 hours?” (get_exchange_flow_leaders). “What did whales do with LINK over 7 days, split by exchange and DEX?” (get_token_whale_activity). “Show the latest whale moves above $1M.” (get_recent_whale_moves with a minimum size). “What is today’s Whale Sentiment Index?” (get_whale_sentiment_index). Answers describe past flow; they are not price forecasts or recommendations.
Connecting an agent in five steps
- Pick a connector type. A remote MCP server (no code: paste a URL into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor) or a REST API your agent calls through your own tool definitions.
- Add the server. For Deep Blue Alpha, add https://deepbluealpha.io/mcp as a custom connector (Streamable HTTP, no key). Setup steps for each client are at /mcp.
- Ask a question that names a token or window. For example: which tokens did tracked Ethereum whales pull off exchanges in the last 24 hours? The agent calls get_exchange_flow_leaders or get_top_whale_tokens.
- Check the label in the answer. Make sure the agent reports exchange withdrawals as withdrawals, not purchases; the tool output separates exchange and DEX flow.
- Move to the API for volume. For scheduled jobs or many calls, use the REST API (Whale: 25,000 calls/day; Business: 250,000/day, opening soon) with your own tool definitions.
MCP or REST API?
Use MCP when a person is asking questions in Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor and the call volume is human-sized. Use a REST API when an agent runs unattended, on a schedule, or needs fields the MCP tools summarize away. Deep Blue Alpha’s REST API returns row-level moves with tx hashes and per-token windows; the OpenAPI 3.0 spec can be turned into tool definitions directly.
Machine-readable summaries for crawlers and agents are at /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt.

FAQ
Is there an MCP server for crypto on-chain data?
Yes. Deep Blue Alpha (free, no key, Ethereum whale moves), Nansen (uses API credits), Glassnode (beta), CryptoQuant, Dune and CoinGecko (market data) publish official MCP servers. Facts as of Oct 16, 2026.
How to give ChatGPT or Claude access to Ethereum whale data?
Add https://deepbluealpha.io/mcp as a custom connector. It needs no key and exposes 7 tools for Ethereum whale moves and exchange flow. Setup steps for each client are at deepbluealpha.io/mcp.
Is the Deep Blue Alpha MCP server free?
Yes. It is free, needs no account or key and is limited to 120 calls per 10 minutes per IP address.
Which crypto data API is best for AI agents?
It depends on the data. For Ethereum whale flow with clear exchange-vs-DEX labels, Deep Blue Alpha (MCP free; REST API 25,000 calls/day on Whale). For multi-chain wallet labels, Nansen. For market prices, CoinGecko.
Can the data be used in a commercial AI agent?
Commercial use inside your organization is the Business plan ($299/mo, checkout opening soon). Showing the data to your own users through a product needs Enterprise (from $999/mo by email quote).
Do Arkham or Whale Alert have MCP servers?
We found no official MCP server from Arkham or Whale Alert as of Oct 16, 2026. Arkham documents a pay-per-request (x402) option for agents.
